Like plants and pets, pipes and indoor fixtures need loving care this winter. No, we’re not suggesting you give them cute pet names. But they do need to stay protected. For example, when left in the cold, pipes can freeze over and burst. You can prevent that by taking these precautions.
Insulate outdoor pipes. Wrap them in special foam tubes, available at your local hardware store.
Fix leaks before they become geysers. Yes, even indoor plumbing fixtures can cause freezing pipes, if those fixtures leak. So check all faucets in your bathroom, kitchens, even the utility room with the washer. See any drips or puddles? If so, give us a shout, and we’ll be right over.
Disconnect and stow away outdoor hoses. You might think…c’mon, is it really possible that pipes can freeze from a tiny opening through the hose? Answer-yes! That water gets into your pipes, freezes, and boom! Or should we say…burst! So be smart, and disconnect your garden hose.
Close and drain any shut-off valves that lead outdoors. Again, this is another precaution most people don’t think about. That’s okay—most people aren’t plumbers. Remember: anything that gives water access to the cold can cause the plumbing to freeze—and—well, you know.
At Zurn, we wish you and your family warm thoughts and a dry house this winter. Of course, if you have any plumbing needs, we’re only a call or click away. Feel free to fill out our online contact form.
