Plumbing emergencies can happen to anyone—even plumbers. So take a plumber’s advice on how to address the crisis—quickly and effectively.

  • Shut off the main water valve.

When water attacks, fight back by going straight to the source—the main shut off valve. Always know where that valve is located—if you don’t, look near the water meter….where it can usually be found. Getting to that valve quickly can made the difference between a puddle and pond in your home.

  • Check your water heater.

In a major emergency, you should turn off the water heater to avoid damage to the unit.  Heat can well up inside it, causing damage and possible leaks.

  • Take care of small leaks immediately.

Small leaks can become big ones.  So it makes sense to spot them, and repair them as soon as possible.

  • Open drains and spigots.

This one might sound a little confusing—in a plumbing emergency, you turn off the main water valve, but open the drains and spigots.  But water stuck in your pipes needs to move away from your home and potential trouble spots. When you think about it, it makes sense. Just don’t think about it too long in an emergency, or you could need a life jacket.
