We’ve all done it: Come home from work or just a long day and take a nice, long shower to help us revitalize. But, believe it or not, the way you take a shower can harm your plumbing. Here are a few shower tips to help keep your plumbing in good shape:
- Clean your hair out of the drain after every shower. Over time, hair can accumulate, cause your drain to run slowly, and clog your drain. If possible, use a drain cover or other type of stop to collect hair after every shower.
- Avoid taking frequent long, hot showers. As soothing as they may be, a long, hot shower may cause mold to grow in your shower or bathroom. And while you may be able to ventilate the area with a fan or window, it’s better to limit your shower time to 10 minutes and use moderately warm water instead.
- Don’t leave water on your floor. Use a shower mat to collect excess moisture after getting out of the shower. If you leave water on the floor, it may warp your floor over time or destroy the grout (or both). Plus, it may cause mold to grow.
- Pay attention to hard water build-up. While hard water can be tough on your hair and skin, it can also collect and block the nozzles of your showerhead. Counter this by wiping your showerhead off after each shower using shampoo. If your efforts aren’t clearing it up, you may need to clean your showerhead with vinegar.
