Hurricane season in the Atlantic Ocean can cause our areas to be at greater risk for severe weather. While you may know to buy food, water, and batteries to prepare for a major rainstorm, you may not realize some of the critical ways to keep your plumbing safe. To help minimize damage, here are five tips to prepare your home’s plumbing for pending severe weather:
- Clear debris from your drains and sump pump. Doing so will allow water to flow where it should and help limit the risk of flooding.
- Examine your sump pump. Not only do you want to make sure your sump pump is clear of debris, but you need to make sure it is working correctly. Test it before any storm arrives to ensure it turns on and off automatically.
- Inspect your septic tank. It’s essential to examine your septic tank regularly to ensure there is nothing in it that may cause a back-up should you experience heavy rains or flooding.
- Shut off your main water valve if you have to evacuate. This will protect your home from leaks while you are not able to be there.
- Turn off the water heater. This will help eliminate any pressure placed on your plumbing system and provide a source of potable water (if needed).
After a storm has passed, clear out debris from your drains and gutters. Pay particular attention to any tree damage, pooling water, or leaks around your property.
