Underground water leaks can cause significant problems if not found and corrected quickly. But how do you know if you have a leak? Let’s take a closer look at some of the things you may see or hear to help you detect an underground water leak.
What are signs you may see that indicate a possible water leak?
Here are some things you may notice that are caused by an underground water leak:
- A noticeable drop in the flow volume or water pressure
- An area of your irrigated landscape that used to be lush and green and is now dying
- Cracking or heaving in paved areas
- Unusual wet spots in landscaping
- Pools of water on the surface of the ground
- Dirt or air in your water, or rusty water
- A moldy, soft, green, or mossy area surrounded by a drier condition
- Potholes or sinkholes on your property
- A sudden increase in your water use that you can’t explain — typically resulting in higher than usual water bills
What sounds may signal an underground water leak?
You may notice different sounds that signal an underground water leak. For example, a “splashing” sound may occur when water sprays the wall of a soil cavity and a “clinking” sound from the pebbles or stones bouncing off the pipes. Or you may hear “hissing” sounds that indicate lower water pressure. In most instances, the frequency, range, and intensity of the sounds depend on how deep the pipe is buried underground, any material covering the ground’s surface, the water pressure, the material and diameter of the pipe, and even the soil type and compaction.
