March means springtime cleaning around the house. Since you’re making the rounds anyway, it’s also a good time to check for leaking around hoses and plumbing fixtures. After all, what good is a clean house if it’s three feet underwater? Here are a few helpful tips to stop trouble before it starts.
- Watch for water leaks associated with sprinklers and outdoor faucets.
- Check under sinks and supply hoses. This includes hoses that run into the washing machine and the dishwasher. If you spot puddles, moisture, rust or corrosion, it’s time to replace them.
- Turn the water valves. Water valves can get hard to turn over time. Once annually, turn off the water valves in your home, then turn them back on just to keep the parts from becoming sticky.
- Leaky toilets can consume more than 40% of your normal water usage. Installation of a new toilet flapper and fill valve will keep your toilet running efficiently.
- A leaky faucet that drips once per second can waste more than 8 gallons a day. That’s 3,000 gallons per year!
