If you ever see us walking around with two metal rods and waiting for them to cross, relax, we aren’t going crazy. They’re called dowsing rods and have been used to locate everything from metals and petroleum to gemstones and groundwater for approximately 500 years. We’re using them to find water and pipes, but we’ll be sure to let you know if we come across anything that’ll make you filthy rich.
Dowsing rods, also known as witching sticks, have been greeted with a mix of skepticism and superstition. However, we’re plumbers, not sorcerers. We’re big on innovation but even bigger on whatever works best to get the job done right.
Most dowsers today use a pair of L-shaped metal rods, holding one in each hand. When something is detected by the rods, they cross over one another. A long and straight object such as a water pipe may cause the rods to point in opposite directions.
Although many studies have been conducted yielding mixed results over the years, we find that some of the best solutions are also the simplest.
