What does spring cleaning mean to you? For most of us, it means cleaning out the garage, reorganizing our home office, or donating unused clothing to a worthy cause. But spring is also a perfect time to check on your plumbing. And if you act now, you’ll potentially save thousands of dollars in future repairs.
Here’s a Spring Plumbing Checklist designed just for you:
- Check every faucet and open pipe in your home to ensure it’s not leaking.
- Add five or six drops of food coloring to the water in your toilet tank. If any enters into your toilet bowl within an hour, you may have a leak.
- Be sure the temperature for your water heater is set to no more than 120 degrees.
- If your water heater is more than 10 years old, it may be time to replace it.
- Clean mineral deposits on your showerheads with white vinegar. (NOTE: If that doesn’t remove the deposits, you may need to soak them in vinegar for 12–24 hours.)
- Unclog your drains using a plumber’s snake or other non-chemical methods.
- Clean out your gutters, downspouts, and other drainage sources outside.
- Check all vents and hoses for leaking, bulging, or blockage.
Stay on top of your home’s plumbing maintenance by completing this checklist every spring. As with anything, prevention is always better than treatment!
