Water. Its destructive power carved the Grand Canyon. But water doesn’t need a million years to do a number on your plumbing fixtures—it can happen at any time when temperatures plunge. Water trapped in your pipes freezes and expands until the pipe bursts and boom! You’ve got a very unnatural waterway in your home.

Here are a few things you can do to stop trouble before it starts.

  • Fix plumbing leaks now.

Most leaks occur around plumbing fixtures. Leaky faucets are easy to detect…toilets (which are the most common source of leaks), not so much. If you’ve got curled flooring, or displaced tiles around the toilet, it’s probably a leak.

  • Disconnect the outdoor hose. Water in the hose goes into the pipes, where it can freeze.

Outside water sources can lead to frozen pipes. Seal the valves.

  • Clean out your sump pump pit.

Sump pumps are crucial to keeping water out of your basement. Debris and water in the surrounding pit can prevent your pump from doing its job.
