Sump pump maintenance is probably not at the top of your “to-do” list. But, there are essential tasks to do every year so it’s ready when you need it. And, the best time to get your sump pump in shape is during the winter months.
Here’s a checklist of tasks to complete every year:
- Check the pump’s power source to ensure it’s safely connected. It would be best if you also inspected its cord for signs of wear and tear.
- Verify the pump is level and upright – when used, the water vibrations may cause it to tilt out of place.
- Clean out any debris from the basin or pit and then fill it with about 5 gallons of water. Doing this will ensure your pump starts and works properly.
- Detach the pump from the basin and clear any debris from the grate.
- Check on all pipes that take water out of the system – make sure all joints are connected tightly and drain properly. You always want to make sure drainage points away from your home’s foundation.
- Clear all water from your discharge pipe and make sure it’s free of debris.
Before you perform any maintenance on your sump pump, disconnect your power supply. Once you’ve completed these tasks, put the pump back into the basin and fill it with water, so it operates properly when you turn it back on.
