You’re headed out of town to the beach. A few simple plumbing tips will make sure you don’t come home to a lake.
- Turn off your water main.
Know where your the main shut off valve is located; usually it’s around your water meter. Turn the valve off if you’ll be gone for more than a few days. Water unleashed in your home can do more damage than a bull in a china shop.
- Turn down your water heater.
It’s not like you’ll be using it while you’re gone, so why not give it a break? You’ll see a smaller utility bill and save wear and tear. Be nice to your water heater, and it’ll be good to you.
- Unclog everything.
Showers, sinks, garbage disposals: Any backups left to fester while you’re gone could lead to problems. While you’re at it, check your pipes for leaks. Oh, and don’t overfeed the goldfish. (We realize goldfish have nothing to do with plumbing, but we really like goldfish.)
